After the French and Cuban revolutions, Havanese as a breed has experienced a big crisis. But now the breed is gaining popularity, having a loyal following of believers in the breed who are actively campaigning to save the Havanese in the US. This dog belongs to a family of Bichons. French name Bichon Frise means “wool dog” or “curly dog.” “Bichon” means a beard, as the word “Barbichon” means a small beard, the word “Frise” means curly.
Bichon Havanese came in Cuba from an earlier breed known as Blanquito de la Habana. Bichon Havanese, it has improved the breed, he lived exclusively in the homes of aristocratic Cubans B18-th and 19 th centuries. Bichon Lapdogs were brought to Cuba in the 17 th century from Europe, they adapted to the climate and the conditions of Cuba. Ultimately, these conditions predetermined appearance of various breeds of dogs, smaller than its predecessors, with a full white coat silky texture.
Thus was born breed Blanquito de la Habana. In the 19 th century, Cuba began to come in French and German Poodles, which were crossed with existing Blanquito, by mating appeared now known breed Bichon Havanese. In the development of Havanese, blood Blanquito was much more dominant than the poodle. Bichon Havanese appeared in the mid-19 th century. Havanese in the U.S. emerged in the early 70′s. In the late 60′s after the revolution, many Cubans immigrated to the United States. Cuban refugees settled in Florida, and some had brought their Havanese. American canine Goodale has kept the breed from extinction. It gave the ads in the Florida press that wants to buy dog breeds Havanese. As a result, it found two or three families of Cuban immigrants who brought with them from Cuba these dogs with papers. From them, Goodale received six Bichon Havanese with genealogy. It was a bitch with 4 puppies – girls and a puppy – a boy. Later she was able to get 5 more males from Costa Rica. As an experienced canine, Goodale began working with eleven dogs.
The first progeny appeared in 1974. UKC recognized breed in 1991. AKC recognized in 1996. CKC (Canada) found them in 2001. In the mid-80′s, some German handlers obtain offspring unusual Havanese. These dogs do not grow full coats and generally smaller than their cousins. They had long hair on the skirts, tail, legs, chest and ears – the rest of the body was a short six. Dog experts have long studied a new branch of Havanese and proved that it was not a random genetic mutation in a single generation. These dogs were called Smooth Havanese, later in their renamed as Shavanese.
SIZE
Adult dog reaches 20-30 cm at the withers, weighs 6.3 kg. Wool is soft and has a silky texture.
COLOUR
Color is diverse: white, black, white and apricot, white and black.
CHARACTER
Has a gay character, a very smart and obedient dog. It loves all family members, especially children. It is not tolerate loneliness.
CARE
It requires combing and bathing once every 2-3 weeks, trimming every 1-2 months.
